What is the Current Pay for Game Tester?
Being a video game tester may sound like the perfect job for you; you love video games, know how to write reports, and have the time necessary to do in-depth testing. But the big question that everyone asked about a job is this: how much does video game testing pay?, and can you make a living at it?
The answer is that it depends on how much experience you have in testing. An inexperienced video game tester may make between $8 and $10 an hour, while a veteran tester may make as much as $20 an hour. It also depends on which video game company you’re working with. Some pay their testers more than others. Some pay more depending on the game being tested, too, because some games do require more attention to detail than others.
There are a few downsides to video game testing. For one thing, your salary is not going to be steady. While you may get three games to test one month and find yourself working 40 or more hours a week, the next month you may not get any games to test. You never know how many games you’ll be asked to test each month, so you can’t guess at what your pay will be. This means you may need a second job to ensure that you can pay your bills.
The other downside to video game testing is that you will most likely be hired as a contract worker. This means that no taxes will be taken out of your paychecks. When tax time comes around, you may find that you owe the government a hefty amount. Be sure to set back some money to pay your taxes every year so you don’t end up scrambling for money in April.
