Qualifications for Being a Game Tester
There are many different qualifications for being a video game tester, and by showing how you meet these various qualifications on your resume or application, you'll be able to beat out the many other potential game testers for jobs. Here are some of the main qualifications and ways you can meet them.
The first major qualification for being a game tester is being able to write well. Programmers will most often rely on your written reports to discover what is wrong with their games. If you can't present them with a well-written, detailed report, they won't be able to reproduce the exact circumstances that led to the bug you discovered, and if they can't do that, they may not be able to fix the problem. To demonstrate your ability to write well, you need to put together a writing portfolio, or at least have several writing samples to present to potential employers. One of the best ways of doing this is to start a video game review blog. Simply play games and write up a detailed review of them. Taking a few writing classes in college is another good way of showing that you know how to write.

Another qualification necessary is good time management and the ability to work independently. Often, you'll do all of your testing work from home. Game companies will send you the video game and you'll play and test it as you have time. However, you will almost always have a deadline to adhere to, so it's very important that you manage your time well and have time to thoroughly test the game. To show that you are a self-starter and can manage time well, you should be prepared to discuss ways in which you met deadlines at your other jobs. By starting and regularly updating your video game review blog, you can show that you have initiative and can stick to something once you start it, which reflects well on you.
Game Tester Qualifications
One major qualification is, of course, to love video games. Many people say the love gaming and play video games all the time, but what they really do is love a specific game genre and, while they may play it a lot, they don't really delve into the game industry. If you truly have a passion for video gaming, you'll at least have a passing familiarity with the many different game genres, even if you only regularly play games in two or three of them. You should also be familiar with the major game publishers and developers and be well-informed of any major video game news. Being able to name several video game websites, upcoming games you're interested in, or specific information about the company you're applying to can impress potential employers.
