The fact that developers are now outsourcing this work is good news for those of us who live in remote locations. It means that where we live shouldn’t really matter. Of course we will probably need a good and reliable internet connection but most of us will have this these days anyway. There are now many game testers who live in rural areas and this has no real affect on how they do the job.

Picking up game testing work can be quite difficult in the beginning. You have no reputation and you will be facing a lot of competition. It is easy to get caught in the catch 22 situation of not being able to find work because you have no experience, but not being able to get any experience because you can’t find work. This is a situation that most game testers have found themselves in but the good news is that there is a way out of this. Applying to developers directly is unlikely to prove too successful if you have no experience, but you could get lucky.

A good option is to join an online testing community or an agency. You won’t make as much money as you would by being employed directly by the developer but you can gain experience. The great thing about an online community is that you are getting paid some money, learning the trade, and hopefully doing a bit of networking.
