How to Test Games before Your First Interview
When you go in for your first video game testing interview, you're likely to be asked a lot of questions about your game testing experience and how you approach testing games. If you've got some game testing experience, or experience testing anything, you should be able to answer a lot of these questions. However, if you've never really thought out the entire process of game testing, you may find yourself drawing a blank and stumbling through the interview. This won't leave a very good impression on the interviewer, and you may not get the job because of it.
To overcome this problem, you need to learn how to test video games before you reach the interview process. There are a number of different ways you can go about doing this. You can do some research on the internet, for example. There are some sites out there that do detail the process of testing video games. These sites may be a good place to start, but after you read them, you should try out their methods before your interview. It's one thing to read about testing a game, but it's quite another to actually test the game yourself.
How to Test Games
Another way to learn about game testing is to look for books in the computer programming section of your local bookstore. Computer programmers have to do a lot of testing on their programs before they release them, and while testing some computer applications is not exactly the same as testing a video game, some of the basic principles are the same. Often, these books have chapters on testing computer games, which can be very helpful. If you know any programmers, you can always volunteer to help them test out their programs so that you get some actual experience in testing. Again, while it's not game testing, it is still a type of testing and can be listed as experience on your resume.

Video Game Testing
If you get the chance, you should also join a beta test group. Sometimes, computer game companies, especially companies developing an online game, will put out a call for beta testers. These testers get an advance copy of the game and are asked to play it for a specific time period. During that time, they send the company notes about what works and what doesn't, and the company makes some final fine-tuning before they sell the game. This is an excellent way to learn how to test games before you interview with a company for a paying game testing job. Note that these beta testers very, very rarely get paid for their work. Instead, they get to play the game before everyone else and get the satisfaction of knowing they helped the game company make the game better.
You're likely to be pretty nervous at your first video game testing interview, but if you know how to test games and have a good grasp of the concepts of testing, you shouldn't have a problem answering any of the questions. Just remember to do a few mock interviews beforehand so you're ready for the interview process.
