Game Developer So you have a great idea for a video game that has never been done before, or you've figured out a way to take a common game theme or idea and twist it so that it's new and fresh. How do you become a video game developer and get this game made? That's a good question, and the answer involves hard work and education. Becoming a game developer is a dream many have but few actually realize. If you're interested in this career, here are some tips.

Get a Good Education

Getting an education is very important, especially since many game companies will not hire people without a degree. There are some universities and colleges out there with specific degrees in video game design and development. Getting one of these degrees is a great way of gaining the education and experience necessary  to becoming a video game developer. However, it's not completely necessary. Any university degree in computer programming can help you get a job as a video game developer, although it does help if you can take specific classes in game design.

Don't Expect to Get a Developer Job Right Away

Many video game developers start out as programmers. This is a good way of getting your foot in the door and showing the company what you can do. If you take lead on a video game and really show off your development skills, you will be rewarded, and eventually, you'll be promoted to developer.

Game Developing

Most developer positions are senior positions in the company, so they will require you to have some experience in the video game industry. The only way to get this experience is to start at the bottom, so be ready to spend some time doing other work. But don't worry—if you've got the talent, you'll get your job as a developer.

Don't Be Discouraged

Once you've got the experience and the education necessary, it's time to start applying for developer positions. However, you'll probably realize right away that these positions are often few and far between. Most people who become game developers stay in that job until they retire, so finding an opening can be difficult. There aren't that many developer positions to start with, and the competition can be fierce. This means you have to keep trying and not get discouraged if you're passed over for a position.
