Guaranteed Way to Get Video Game Tester Jobs
If you're applying to video game companies to be a game tester, you probably want to know the guaranteed way to land one of the jobs. Well, as with any job, there is no 100% guarantee that you will get it, but there is something you can do to make sure your application is towards the top of the stack of preferred applicants: gets video game testing experience.
Now, you may be wondering how you can get experience without getting a video game testing job. There are actually two different things you can do. The first is to join open beta tests. These tests are often done for Massively Multiplayer Online games like Final Fantasy XIV, but they are sometimes done for other PC or even console games as well.
Beta tests consist of chosen players (the developers don't always choose everyone who applies) playing a nearly-finished version of the game before it is released to everyone. They are expected to report any and all bugs and errors they find in return for getting an early preview of the game. They don't typically get paid, but sometimes they receive an interesting in-game item that carries over to the retail version.
Get Video Game Tester Jobs
The second way of getting video game testing experience is to inquire at the nearest university's computer science department. You can volunteer to test students' programs and try to crash them. While you may not actually test out many games, this is a good way to learn how to test and what to look for when testing. You may even want to take a class or two in programming or quality assurance while you're there.
By getting a little of this non-paid video game testing experience on your resume, you'll beat out all of those applicants who simply have "I love playing video games" on their application. It could very well be the thing that lands you the job over others.
