Game Tester Jobs at Home
One of the best things about being a video game tester is that you get to work from home. While some testers do actually work in an office at the gaming company, many do not. Part of the reason for this is that game companies need a large number of testers for each game, and most of the time, they can't find enough testers in their local area.
They also want a variety of testers. Sometimes, for example, a local saying or phrase gets put into a game that people in one area understand perfectly but those living in another area do not. Having a wide range of game testers makes certain these types of things are caught.
Benefits of Testing Games at Home
Working from home has a number of great benefits. The first is that you can set your own hours and days off. If you get ahead on your testing, for example, you can take an extra day off or only do a few hours of work one day. Your work time is flexible, too—if you need to go pick up your children from school or need to set a doctor's appointment in the middle of the day, that's no problem. It's also nice to be able to work all day from home and never get out of your pajamas!
Another benefit that comes with testing games from home is that you can multitask. You can do laundry, for example, while you test. You can also handle some other household chores while you take a break from testing (which you should do every couple of hours). It's also convenient to work from home when you know you have a delivery coming that you have to sign for or when you need a plumber or other maintenance person to come to your home to work on something.
Downsides to Working from Home
» While it may not seem like it, there are some downsides to working from home. It can actually get kind of lonely.
» While playing video games all day is fun, one downside is that you don't get a lot of human contact. This can lead to a hermit-like lifestyle if you're not careful. Try to get out of your home at least a couple of times a week. This can also lead to what's sometimes called "cabin fever," or being in your home for too long.
» Some people simply need a change of scenery, especially if they've done nothing but played games for ten hours straight.
That's another downside to working from home and being a game tester in general—you have to be very good at making your deadlines. If you take too many days off, you're going to suddenly find yourself facing a looming deadline. You may suddenly have to put in very long days to get the entire game tested and your report written. If you're late too often, you may find yourself suddenly unemployed.
