Focus Game Testing Jobs
Focus game testing jobs are a bit different than doing video game reviews or game testing. It's more in line with other types of focus group testing, although some game playing is required. Many companies that do focus game testing will do so before they do standard game tests.
What Focus Game Testing Involves?
Generally, focus game testing involves testing a game (often just a level or a demo version) and then gong in for a focus group. The focus group involves meeting with several representatives of the gaming company and other focus game testers. You then discuss what you liked about the game, what you didn't, how it could be made better, etc. The group facilitators may have specific questions for you, or they may simply record the group discussion as you and the other focus testers chat.
Differences between Focus Game Testing and Standard Game Testing
The largest difference is that you will need to live in the same city as the gaming company so you can meet with the group. With regular game testing, it doesn't really matter where you live since all you need to do is play the game and send in a report. With focus group testing, there's usually no written report to do. Instead, you may want to take notes regarding your game playing experience to take with you to the focus group. A few companies do online focus groups or do conference call groups, but most want the testers in the same room so the discussion can more easily flow.

Usually, you don't actually play the entire game when doing a focus group. The purpose of the group is to get an idea of what's working with the game and what isn't. After the focus group, the game may undergo minor or major changes depending on what the focus group members say.
Becoming a Focus Game Tester
Getting a job as a focus game tester is even more difficult than getting a job as a game tester. This is because you're very limited geographically. You have to live in the same city as the game company, and you'll be competing against everyone else who wants to be a part of the group.
