Being a Video Game Tester for Multiple Companies
Working as a video game tester doesn't always mean making a lot of money. There's also often only a small amount of game testing work available from one company at any one time. Because of this, many game testers work for various game developers and companies. This means they have more games to test and will make more money.
How to Get Jobs with Multiple Companies
Getting jobs with multiple video game companies is just as easy (or as difficult) as getting a job with one. You simply send in your resume, apply in response to calls for testers, or go through various temp agencies that place testers with game companies. It can be difficult getting that first game testing job, but once you do, getting jobs with other game testing companies is easier. This is because you'll be able to show that you're working as a game tester and that you're gaining experience as a tester.
Legalities
Some people may wonder if it's completely legal to work for more than one video game company at a time. The answer is yes, it's perfectly legal as long as you do not sign any exclusivity or non-competition agreements. Most game companies consider their game testers as work for hire, which means you're not an actual employee of the company. Instead, you are an independent contractor. This means you're free to have any other jobs you want, including working for other game companies. Before you accept a contract with a second company, you may want to read through your game testing contract just to make certain that there is nothing preventing you from taking other testing jobs. If you have any questions, ask an attorney or other legal expert to look over your contract.
Planning Your Testing Schedule
One thing you want to be careful about when working for multiple video game testing companies is taking on too much work. It can be tempting to agree to test four or five games at once, especially if the money is good, but if you take on more work than you can handle, you may not be able to make your deadlines. This can lead to you losing several of your game testing contracts. Before you take on more than one video game testing contract, be certain that you'll have enough time to fully test each game you agree to take on.
